The Anchor: A Prayer I Carry With Me

The Anchor: A Prayer I Carry With Me

The Spiritual Meaning of Staying Anchored to God’s Path

Some tattoos tell a story. Mine tells a prayer.

If you’ve ever met me, you’ve probably noticed the anchor tattoo on my left wrist.

Most people assume it’s because I love the ocean.

And I do.

I love the smell of salt air. I love the sound of waves. I love the way standing at the edge of the water reminds me how small I really am.

But that’s not why the anchor is there.

The truth is, every time I look at it, I see a prayer.

If I line the top point of the anchor up with my thumb, it becomes one. Not because someone told me it would, but because somewhere along the way I decided it should.

Every time I notice it, I quietly pray the same words:

“God, keep me anchored to Your path.”

Not my plan.

Not my timeline.

Not the life I thought I would have.

Your path.

Because I’ve lived long enough to know those aren’t always the same thing.

God Doesn’t Always Calm the Storm

There’s a quote I’ve carried with me for years:

“God doesn’t always calm the storm. Sometimes He calms the sailor.”

I know that’s true because I’ve lived it.

There have been moments in my life when nothing around me changed.

The diagnosis was still there.

The uncertainty was still there.

The pain was still there.

The answers still hadn’t come.

And yet… so was peace.

Not because everything suddenly made sense.

Not because the storm had passed.

But because God met me right in the middle of it.

I’ve felt an unexplained sense of peace in the middle of absolute chaos.

It’s hard to explain unless you’ve experienced it yourself.

It’s an unshakable peace that doesn’t make sense on paper. A quiet confidence that whispers, “You’re going to be okay.”

Not because you know how the story ends.

Because you know who is writing it.

I’ve felt that peace sitting in doctor’s offices.

I’ve felt it lying awake at night wondering what tomorrow would look like.

I’ve felt it on days when my body felt like it was fighting against me.

The circumstances didn’t change overnight.

I did.

God didn’t always remove the storm.

Sometimes He simply reminded me that I wasn’t facing it alone.

Why the Anchor Means So Much to Me

For thousands of years, sailors depended on anchors to survive.

An anchor wasn’t decoration.

It wasn’t fashionable.

It wasn’t something you noticed until you desperately needed it.

When the waves became too strong and the wind threatened to carry the ship away, the anchor held fast.

It didn’t stop the storm.

It simply gave the ship something stronger than the current to hold onto.

I think that’s exactly what faith does.

Faith doesn’t promise an easy life.

It promises that we don’t have to face the hard parts alone.

What Are You Anchored To?

We all anchor ourselves to something.

Success.

Approval.

Money.

Relationships.

Control.

The problem is, those things can disappear.

People leave.

Bodies get sick.

Plans change.

Dreams take unexpected turns.

Life has a way of reminding us that almost everything here is temporary.

So the question isn’t whether you’re anchored.

The question is…

What are you anchored to?

Anchored, Not Stuck

One of my favorite things about an anchor is that it isn’t meant to stay in the water forever.

When it’s time to move, it’s lifted.

The journey continues.

The anchor wasn’t keeping the ship from living.

It was keeping it from drifting.

I think God does the same thing.

Sometimes He asks us to stay still long enough to remember who we are before He calls us forward again.

Being anchored isn’t the same as being stuck.

Sometimes it’s the very thing that prepares us for what’s next.

My Prayer

Every morning, whether I notice it consciously or not, my eyes drift to my left wrist.

The anchor is still there.

The prayer is still the same.

God, keep me anchored to Your path.

When fear gets loud…

Keep me anchored.

When life doesn’t make sense…

Keep me anchored.

When the future feels uncertain…

Keep me anchored.

When I forget that You’re working behind the scenes…

Keep me anchored.

Not to comfort.

Not to certainty.

Not to my own understanding.

To You.

Because I’ve learned something the hard way.

The safest place I have ever been isn’t where life is easiest.

It’s wherever God is leading me.

And that’s exactly where I want to stay.

Final Thoughts

Maybe you found this today because you needed the reminder as much as I did.

Maybe you’ve been praying for God to calm the storm.

And maybe He will.

But maybe He’s doing something even greater.

Maybe He’s calming you.

If that’s where you are today, I hope you know this:

You don’t have to understand every wave.

You don’t have to know how every chapter ends.

You only need to stay connected to the One who never lets go.

Guided by something higher. Built through something harder.
