Maybe My Cup Is Too Full
I’ve been thinking about this old Zen story lately.
A professor travels to meet a wise teacher because he wants to learn everything the teacher knows.
The teacher pours him a cup of tea.
He keeps pouring.
The tea spills over the edge.
Onto the table.
Onto the floor.
The professor finally says, “Stop! It’s full.”
The teacher smiles.
“So are you.”
…
Oof.
That one got me.
Because I don’t think my cup is full of knowledge.
I think it’s full of worry.
It’s full of trying to predict what’s coming next.
It’s full of every worst-case scenario my brain can dream up at three in the morning.
It’s full of old stories I’ve been carrying around for years.
Sometimes I ask God for direction…
…while I’m already convinced I know the answer.
Sometimes I pray for a miracle…
…while quietly deciding it probably won’t happen.
Sometimes I ask for peace…
…without making any room for it.
Maybe that’s why this story keeps finding me.
Maybe life isn’t always asking us to do more.
Maybe sometimes it’s asking us to put something down.
The resentment.
The fear.
The need to control every outcome.
The story we’ve been telling ourselves about who we are.
Because here’s the thing…
You can’t pour fresh water into a cup that’s already overflowing.
And maybe that’s true for hope too.
So today I’m asking myself one simple question.
What am I holding onto that’s leaving no room for something better?
I don’t have the answer yet.
But I think that’s kind of the point.
Maybe wisdom isn’t having all the answers.
Maybe wisdom is finally becoming curious enough to admit we don’t.
And honestly…
I think that’s where miracles sneak in.

Best time to post:
If your audience is mostly women/moms/reflective readers, this will land best:
-
Early morning (7–9am) or
-
Evening wind-down (7–9pm)
Should you wait until tomorrow?
If it’s already late where you are, yes—wait until tomorrow morning. This is a “quiet coffee” post, not a late-night scroll post. It deserves a calm, present audience.
If it’s still daytime or early evening, you can post today.
Final note:
This one is strong. It feels honest, grounded, and very you. Don’t overthink it—this is exactly the kind of piece people save and come back to.
